People from indigenous cultures are more likely to experience negative consequences of alcohol and drug use, including developing a substance use disorder, living through trauma, and dying from overdose. American Indian and Alaska Native people benefit from culturally relevant approaches to prevention, treatment, and recovery for substance use disorders.  This two-hour live virtual training for California-based Tribal and Urban Indian health care providers will feature clinical strategies to infuse indigenous culture into evidence-based practice. Attendees will learn approaches to integrate culturally responsive evaluation and program development, with an emphasis on community engagement, including families, children, and elders. A motivational interviewing intervention developed specifically for Native American youth who use alcohol or drugs will be highlighted, as well. Activities will include small group discussion for attendees to discuss how they can implement takeaways from the presentation.
